有 and 在
Existence/possession with 有 and location with 在.
Goals
- Express possession with 有 and 没有
- Express existence: place + 有 + noun
- Locate people/things with 在
- Use progressive 在 + verb carefully
- Ask 有吗? and 在哪儿?
有 for possession
Subject + 有 + noun means have. Negate with 没有—never 不有.
我有手机。我没有时间。
Questions: 你有…吗?
I have a phone.
I don’t have time.
Do you have a pen?
有 for existence
Place + 有 + noun means there is/are.
这儿有银行吗?房间里有桌子。
Context tells possession vs existence.
Is there a bank here?
There is a table in the room.
There is nobody.
在 for location
Subject + 在 + place says where someone/something is.
Do not use 是 for location: say 我在家, not 我是家.
在……上/下/里 are useful place frames.
I am at home.
The cat is on the chair.
Where are you?
在 for progressive
Subject + 在 + verb can mark an ongoing action: 他在吃饭。
Beginners should learn location 在 first, then progressive.
Context and particles clarify meaning over time.
He is eating.
I am studying.
She is on a phone call.
Combining patterns
有 and 在 often appear in the same conversation about places and things.
Ask where, then ask whether something exists there.
Practice with the places deck and 在 pattern guide.

Does the school have a library?
I am at the store.
