Study habits that stick

A beginner routine that balances tones, words, patterns, and short reading.

Goals

  • Build a short daily Mandarin loop you can repeat
  • Balance tones, words, patterns, and reading
  • Use spaced reuse instead of one-time cramming
  • Track weekly review targets
  • Recover after missed days without guilt spirals

The daily loop

A practical loop: 5 minutes tones → 10 minutes words → one pattern → one dialogue shadow.

Speaking aloud is non-negotiable even in short sessions.

Stop while you still have energy so tomorrow feels easy to start.

每天练习。 Měi tiān liànxí.

Practice every day.

我在学习中文。 Wǒ zài xuéxí Zhōngwén.

I am studying Chinese.

再说一次。 Zài shuō yí cì.

Say it again.

Reuse beats novelty

The same words should reappear in lessons, decks, phrases, and reads.

New content is useful only if yesterday’s content still gets airtime.

Prefer a smaller active set over a giant passive list.

Weekly structure

Pick one focus each day: tones, pinyin traps, numbers, food talk, directions.

Once a week, record a 30-second self-intro.

Once a week, rewrite 8 sentences from a pattern guide with new nouns.

今天学声调。 Jīntiān xué shēngdiào.

Today study tones.

明天复习单词。 Míngtiān fùxí dāncí.

Tomorrow review vocabulary.

我会说一点。 Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎn.

I can speak a little.

When you feel stuck

Simplify the sentence instead of abandoning speaking.

Return to sandhi, measures, and 是/有/在 frames.

Use myths/FAQ pages to correct unhelpful beliefs, then practice.

慢一点。 Màn yìdiǎn.

A little slower.

我不知道。 Wǒ bù zhīdào.

I don’t know.

请帮忙。 Qǐng bāngmáng.

Please help.
