Tone 2: rising

Start mid and rise—similar to English “huh?” but shorter and clearer.

How it feels

Tone 2 should rise cleanly. Avoid starting too high or the rise will disappear.

Keep the rise audible even on short syllables like má.

Do not turn it into a long English question drawl.

High-frequency rises

人、来、谁、还、没 often carry tone 2 and appear constantly.

Practice them after tone 1 warm-ups so the contrast is fresh.

Watch 没 méi—learners sometimes flatten it.

Contrast drills

Use mā/má and shī/shí style pairs when available.

Say tone 1 then immediately tone 2 on the same syllable.

Check that tone 2 does not fall at the end.

In phrases

In 中国 Zhōngguó, the second syllable rises.

In 你好 ní hǎo, sandhi creates a rise on the first syllable—listen for that shape.

Rising tones should still be clear before neutral particles.

Practice tips

  • Pair tone 2 with tone 1 on the same syllable: mā / má.
  • Keep the rise audible even in short syllables like má.
  • Warm up with 人/来/学/茶.
  • If your rise vanishes, start lower on purpose.
