What pinyin is (and is not)
Pinyin is the official romanization for Mandarin pronunciation—not English spelling.
A pronunciation tool
Pinyin tells you how a syllable sounds and which tone to use. It is not a substitute for learning characters long-term.
Letters can look familiar but represent different sounds (q, x, c, zh).
Use pinyin to unlock speaking quickly, then attach characters to known words.

It is not a claim that Mandarin “uses the English alphabet” as English does.
It is not a permanent replacement for reading signs and menus.
It is not tone-optional decoration—tone marks/numbers are part of the pronunciation.

Marks vs numbers
Tone marks (mā) are ideal for reading aloud. Numbers (ma1) are handy for typing notes.
Input methods often let you type without tones and choose characters from a list.
For study cards, prefer marks so your eyes rehearse contour.
