Pattern
了 intro
Meet 了 for completed action and change-of-state at beginner level.
Completed action
我吃了。他去了北京。
了 often marks that an action is done in context.
Beginner use: attach after the verb in simple past-like reports.
Change of state
下雨了。我明白了。
Sentence-final 了 can signal a new situation.
Listen for “now it’s the case.”
Negation note
For “did not,” beginners often use 没 + verb (no 了): 我没吃。
Do not stack 没 and 了 in the basic pattern.
Master affirmation with 了 first.
Keep it light
了 is usually neutral/light.
Do not overuse 了 on every verb.
Copy model sentences from dialogues.
Examples
I ate / I’ve eaten.
He went / has gone.
I bought coffee.
It’s raining (now).
I understand now.
(Someone) has come!
Ready / okay now.
I didn’t eat (no 了).
Tips
- Start with simple Verb + 了.
- Use 没 + Verb for did-not without 了.
- Treat 了 as light/neutral.
- Learn from dialogue models before chasing advanced aspect theory.
