The four tones (+ neutral)

Hear and produce the four contour tones and the light neutral tone with reliable beginner cues.

Practice Practice Practice

Goals

  • Produce tone 1–4 on open syllables like mā / má / mǎ / mà
  • Recognize neutral tone as short and light
  • Use pitch contour, not English stress, as your guide
  • Contrast minimal sets before moving to long sentences
  • Self-check with recording: ending height, rise, low, and fall

Tone shapes

Tone 1 is high and level. Tone 2 rises. Tone 3 dips (often realized as a low tone in speech). Tone 4 falls sharply. Neutral tone is short and unstressed.

English stress is about loudness and length. Mandarin tone is about pitch path across the syllable.

Train with the same syllable in all four tones so your ear locks onto contour, not vocabulary guessing.

妈 / 麻 / 马 / 骂 mā / má / mǎ / mà

mother / hemp / horse / scold

妈妈 māma

mom (second syllable often neutral)

大 / 打 dà / dǎ

big / hit

Tone 1 and tone 2

Tone 1 should not droop at the end. If it falls, listeners may hear tone 4.

Tone 2 needs a clear rise. Starting too high leaves no room to go up.

Pair drills help: mā–má, tiān–tián, shū–shú.

tiān

day / sky (tone 1)

tián

sweet (tone 2)

shū

book (tone 1)

Tone 3 and tone 4

In isolation, tone 3 often dips then rises. In connected speech, staying low is usually enough.

Tone 4 should feel decisive and short—clear fall without shouting.

Before another tone 3, the first syllable usually becomes tone 2 (你好 ní hǎo).

hǎo

good

shì

to be

你好 ní hǎo

hello (sandhi)

Neutral tone

Particles like 吗、呢、吧 are typically neutral. Many everyday second syllables lighten: 妈妈、朋友.

Do not give particles a full contour. Keep them short.

Neutral pitch depends on the previous tone; beginners should aim for “light and quick” first.

ma

yes/no question particle

朋友 péngyou

friend

桌子 zhuōzi

table

Practice tip

Hold tone 1 steady. For tone 3 in isolation, go low then slightly up; in phrases, prioritize staying low.

Use the tone trainer daily for five minutes before vocabulary study.

Shadow short real words, not only nonsense syllables, so meaning and pitch connect.

to drink

lái

to come

to go

Takeaways

  • Tone is part of the word, not decoration.
  • Neutral tone is common on particles and many second syllables.
  • Drill minimal sets before long sentences.
